Truth
What is the truth? That question runs through Grendel's mind constantly and I cannot say that I blame him. It is quite hard to understand what is real and what is a lie in Grendel's world. His mother doesn't tell him anything so he is left alone to try and figure out the world and his place in it all alone. So of course when the Shaper comes along, preaching about his "truth" Grendel wants to believe it. The Danes in some way needed the Shaper to be there to guide and unite them as a people. I think that the message of the Shaper was not very truthful at all. The Shaper was one to tell people what they wanted to hear and that is not the truth at all.

Aren't Grendel's perceptions and experiences truth? Or are they just shadows of truth?
ReplyDeleteI feel that Grendel's experiences were his own view of the truth. Just like the dragon, the Shaper, the humans, and even his mother each have their own view of life and what is true according to their own experiences, he had his own version.
